Ramrod Key was renamed for a shipwreck in the early 19th century…from there one has easy access to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, a snorkeler/divers paradise. From mile marker 27.5 you are under 3 miles from Big Pine Key and the National Key Deer Refuge. Be sure to have lunch at the NO Name Pub Near Henry Flagler’s railroad and leave a signed dollar bill on the wall! Two miles in the opposite direction you can visit the Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge (1938) amidst 200,000 acres of water and islands know as “the backcountry”.
